Passive Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Injector - Splitter Mid-Span Kit with 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm Size DC Connectors #POEPASS-01

Passive Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Injector - Splitter Mid-Span Kit with 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm Size DC Connectors
Product Description -  Model POEPASS-01

AIR802® has developed passive Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) kits or sets with various size DC connectors. This device provides a low cost solution for delivering power over the network cable. This scheme allows power to be carried on 10/100 networks over the spare, unused pairs of a CAT5, CAT5E, or CAT6 Ethernet network cable. The source power could be the power supply that came with the wireless access point, IP video surveillance camera, etc. or it might be another power supply.

This set contains a very cost effective injector and breakout or splitter component. The injector inserts the DC voltage at the source location into the 5.5mm x 2.1mm injector plug. The DC voltage is then carried over the spare pairs of the 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T network cable. The breakout or splitter extracts the DC voltage from the network cable onto the 5.5mm x 2.1mm splitter jack. AIR802 offers this product in two other DC connector sizes (5.5 mm x 2.5 mm) and (3.5 mm x 1.35 mm). If you have an application requiring another size, contact our office.

As an professional engineering company, we can't specify any precise operating distance. Determining the distance in any given scenario is an electrical calculation that would require knowledge of the wire gauge being used, the input voltage and current. However it is possible to achieve up to the full length of an Ethernet network cable at 100 meters (328 feet), if for example the input voltage and current was high enough to accommodate the voltage drop. The input voltage drops over the distance of a wire and will be less at the output.
Basic Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) Information

Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) is commonplace and very useful allowing DC power voltage to be carried through a CAT5, CAT5E, or CAT6 type cable. This eliminates the need for an AC power outlet nearby any equipment being installed in ceilings, on outside walls or other locations, where power outlets are not conveniently installed. Under the right conditions, with standard PoE injectors, power may be carried over the 100 meter (328 feet) distance limitation of a single network cable run.

There have been two traditional means of accomplishing PoE. One is what AIR802® refers to as pre-802.3af compliant PoE (sometimes referred to as 802.3af Mode B), which is less costly to implement and offers other advantages. The second is 802.3af (or 802.3af Mode A) compliant devices at each end of the network cable. These are known as the power sourcing equipment (PSE) and the powered device (PD) in 802.3af terminology. The use of 802.3af Mode A provides interaction between the PSE and PD to turn power on or off, etc., where passive, pre-802.3af, or Mode B technology provides an always on DC voltage (the voltage depends on the input to the injector).  Pre-802.3af technology or 802.3af Mode B uses the spare pairs (pins 4,5,7 and 8) of an Ethernet network cable to deliver the DC power. Products using 802.3af may deliver power over pairs one and two (pins 1,2,3 and 6) in what is referred to as mode A. Use of the spare pairs can only be used in 10BASE-T and 100BASE-T networks. A 1000Base-T network uses all four pairs. There are many products in the market that use PoE. Some use passive pre-802.3af (802.3af mode B) and some use 802.3af compliant technology.
